NY Shop Uses Humor to Keep Customers Coming Back for More

A shop in western New York State has found a unique way to get their message of customer choice out to the residents in their small home town of Delevan, New York. Mark Kless, one of the three brothers who own Kless Boys Collision & Repair, created a humorous music video to tell his customers they have a choice of where to take their car, and that choice should be Kless Boys.

The video, a parody of the Dukes of Hazzard theme song, pokes fun at insurance company policy and insurance directed repair work.

"Our customers think it's pretty funny and several of our local adjusters have seen it too. They also get a kick out it," said Kless, who directed the home video starring his friends and employees. "We chose the Dukes of Hazzard song," Mark recalled, "because the lyrics fit so perfectly. I don't even like country music."

"The whole idea for the video, though, started out as one of our ads in the local paper," explained Kless, also the lead singer in the video. "We published the song lyrics in the ad, and then realized we just had to make it into a video."

The Kless brothers often star in their own newspaper ads.

The Kless Boys newspaper ads have generated a following in their own right. "Some of our customers have told us that they clip our ads and mail them to their kids away at college- as a little taste of home." The humorous ads include images of the Kless brothers starring in movies like Carsablanca, Pirates of the CARrepairin, or brothers Andy, Mark and Matt portrayed as the Rat Pack: Andy Martin, Mark Sinatra and Matty Davis Jr.

The brothers opened for business selling used cars in 1995, working out of a shed in a road-side field they purchased together. The business expanded to mechanical repair and occasional collision repair work. "From about 1995 to 2002 we maybe did 5-10 collision repair jobs a year. That's when we said to ourselves, 'You know, we're pretty good at this! Let's open a collision shop.' And we started with a 5,000 square foot addition to the business dedicated to collision," Mark recalled.

"When we decided that we were going to become collision repairers, we knew there would be some insurance company involvement in our business," Mark said, "but we had no idea how much it actually was."

"There are a couple of DRP shops close by that we compete with, but our business really has been a success," notes Kless, "Our body shop has taken the philosophy that we'll do good work, we'll treat the customers right, make sure they know they have a choice, and hopefully they will continue to choose us."

The brothers Kless have turned their collision business into a state of the art 10,000 square foot facility that was accepted into the Certified First Network for quality rated body repair and in 2005 the business earned the Small Business of the Year Award from the Arcade Area Chamber of Commerce. The company offers free pickup and delivery and no-charge courtesy cars.
